I am Shannon McMackin
A little bit about myself:
I have lived in Eastern Canada for most of my life. During my IT recruitment life of over two decades, I had the opportunity to support Silicon Valley clients like Cisco, Yahoo, Amazon, Google, Autodesk, Adobe, VMWare, Symantec, Silicon Valley Bank, Kaiser Permanente, Intuitive Surgical, Zoom, and Microsoft to name a few. I have won a number of awards and President’s Club memberships. As a mom of three, including a child with special needs, I understand the unique challenges life can present to us as we pursue our careers. Therefore, I embrace a special dedication to women of all life experiences.
This fuels my commitment to create a supportive ecosystem where knowledge is shared, actions speak volumes, direct communication style is valued, and genuine care thrives.
Putting people first leads to high-trust relationships and results in successful hires.
On a more personal level, I enjoy the downtime of heading up to our cottage in Shediac, NB and sitting at Parlee Beach watching the kids play in the ocean. Campfires, wine, thunderstorms, and movie nights curled up with my husband, the kids and our bearded dragon Oasis, two dogs a cat and our canary - Freddy Mercury, makes life fulfilling.
My Story
My personal information has been compromised on four occasions, through no fault of my own. The first time was almost two decades ago. A company that I had worked at was broken into and all of the computers and hard drives taken.
Talk about old school. The bottom-line is, the thieves may still have my personal information to this day. If they were able to retrieve it.
For many years, that was it.
A decade ago, an insurance company experienced a breach. It was uncertain whether any actual data or personal information was stolen. As a precaution, I was given free access to Equifax for two years so I could monitor my credit file just in case.
That was a little unnerving.
Fast forward to the last four years. My information has been taken through a security breach at a previous employer and a bank. Dark Web style ransomware threats for payment. THOUSANDS of customers, employees and previous employees affected.
While I accepted the apology, I kept thinking that there is no excuse. The leaders of the organizations admitted that they were going to invest in more robust security systems going forward. Great. But my family information is out there. My kids. Because a choice was made NOT to have a robust system in place BEFORE it happened.
Free Equifax again. I will perpetually have free access to my credit file if this keeps up.
The Last Straw
In late November of 2023, a global organization that holds customer genetic profiles was hacked. I am one of those customers. This has to be the most frightening breach.
Not only that, the business has taken the mind-boggling approach of laying some of the blame on their customers.
It was THAT moment when I decided to become part of the solution. With over two decades of expertise in recruitment, my focus has been with Business Professionals and IT Technology professionals. Governance, risk, compliance and cybersecurity recruitment falls within that expertise.
I have taken this opportunity to offer GRC and Cybersecurity recruitment as my specialization to help businesses fill their open security roles.
There is NO EXCUSE to continue to allow bad things to happen with innocent people’s data.
